There is no question that they were intentionally killed by locals. You'd have to be mighty ignorant to think either by itself or an animal would repeatedly turn on and off the cell phone. Sure these aren't White Southern Evangelicals, hence the movie "Deliverance" but the girls met a similar fate, but did not survive... oops I hope I didn't spoil the movie ending.

I honestly believe the two men they had lunch with followed them possibly after the ladies turned them down unbeknownst to the girls. My initial thoughts are that Kris and Lisanne spotted them hours after embarking on their hike. That explains the first emergency calls. Conversation could be hypothetically as follows: Lisanne: “Hey isn’t that those men we had lunch with earlier” Kris: “what, where” Lisanne: “across the river” *points* Kris: “Okay, that’s creepy.. we didn’t invite them and they knew we were heading here” Lisanne: “okay we need to get out of sight walk fast but don’t be too obvious” the girls attempt to flee but Kris shooken slips on rough terrain and hits her head.

First emergency calls ensues. Lisanne then helps Kris to a safe place for her to rest while they both attempt to call emergency services. Eventually, Lisanne’s phone dies and Kris is losing consciousness due to the head injuries. I believe Lisanne then starts to leave traces of them to be found. Shorts on a rock.. (or this sadly could be from being sexually assaulted) the red bag on a stick possibly as a flag for help.. candy wrappers (also their only food source) the mirror to start a fire or to show reflection. Also the mounds.

She tries to use Kris’s phone for help but doesn’t know the pin and Kris is either unconscious or dead and can’t help with the pin. At some point the men finally caught up to them after them trying to out run and hide from them. Lisanne is murdered and Kris is either finished off or was already dead. Their bodies are dismembered and bleached and scattered around the riverbed. The two men then slip out undetected. Likely fleeing the country. This is my theory to be honest. It’s anybody’s guess what truly happened. I know mine might seem extreme but it’s truly what I think happened.

Spooky!

It is certainly possible that they were followed with malice into the forest. Maybe the photos they took were them hearing sounds like people nearby and trying to light the way to see around them?

Did They find both of Their remains linking DNA to both Girls as dead?

If a local tribe &or tourist pyscho didn't kill Them: I think one; or both, were injured. Whether killed from a fall or& from a flash flood; Their remains were eventually washed onto bank. & in meantime; river water & fish in water, & other animals cleaned Their remains without leaving scavenging marks, which is more likely than realized depending of animal... How deep was river & ravine?

Has anything new come to be known?

I'd have to support theory 1 but I am perplexed by the bones being bleached and missing the ligament tissue. Is that something that could happen because of the exposure in that area? I would want to blame the weather in some way too. I think this was more than just getting lost, I think there was an injury or flash flood/mudslide or somethin that contributed.

It was kind of unclear if the bones being bleached was from literal bleach or from sitting in the sun for an extended period of time.

The ligament tissue missing was very perplexing to me as well! Typically, if that is missing, there are also scavenger marks on the bones. It is odd that there the tissue was missing and yet, still no marks on the bones!
